The focal point of the Toyota Foundation's activities outside Japan has been placed on the Southeast Asia region. Specifically, activities are centered on the eight countries of Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. In principle, applications are limited to people in these eight countries. (In the case of translation projects, applications are also accepted from Japanese.) The foundation extends support to Southeast Asian people engaged in cultural projects and research, which tend to be neglected in the pursuit of rapid economic development. We also assist the mutual translation and publication of works by Southeast Asian people in the fields of literature and social science.
