Purpose:

The workshop is designed to focus GrameenPhone Nation Wide Fibre Optic Network and its applications.

GrameenPhone leased Nation wide fibre optic network from Bangladesh Railway and decided to share

use of FON capacity with third party such as other telecom operator, ISP’s, DDN service provider etc.

GrameenPhone Fiber sales started as part of Sales & Marketing in 1997

GrameenPhone Fiber sales became part of ECOL in 2001

Fibre Optic Network (FON) was created as a department affiliated with ECOL in 2002

Finally FON was created as a division on July 2003

Over the past 6 years (1997-2003), we found that Growth of Nationwide Internet Access and data

connectivity traffic are very low.

To increase usage of Nation wide Fibre Optic Network the following applications would be focused in

the above Workshop.

• Fixed Telephony (Other Operators)

• Domestic Data Connectivity (Domestic Data Service Providers)

• Distance Learning (NGOs, Universities)

• Video Conferencing (Govt. Agencies/ Offices, Ministries etc.)

• Connectivity for Utility Services (Electricity, Gas, Water Supply etc.)

• Connectivity for financial institutions such as Banks, Corporate Houses, Small and Medium

Enterprises, Industries

• ON line Internet Access (Nation wide ISP, Cyber Café, CIC)

• Cable TV (Entertainment/ Education etc.)

• Telemedicine (NGO, Medical & Healthcare Entrepreneur).

• Terrestrial Video Broadcasting (Private TV Broadcasters).
