APPENDIX XII
Established in 17 of January of 1909, the Free University of Manáos was the first institution of superior education of Brazil. Its courses - Law and Social Sciences, Natural and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Civil Engineering, Surveying and Agronomy and Sciences and Letters - reflected the main lacks of the manauense society in the beginning of 20th Century when it was renamed to University of Manáos, in 22 of October of 1913. With the economic decline provoked by the end of the cycle of the rubber in Amazon, it was difficult to support it, and the university officially closed in 1926. It was reopened in July 12 1962. Today, the University has about 25,000 students spread over 37 courses and has campuses in the cities of Benjamin Constant, Coari, Itacoatiara, Parintins and Humaitá. It also has advanced campuses in Manacapuru, Lábrea, São Gabriel of Cachoeira and Borba. All in the State of Amazonas.
