Dear Victor:
============

(1) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT I), indicating your willingness to
learn new technologies for your new BUSINESS in the near future.

(2) Teresita's recent msg informed me that, because of severe budget cut,
her UPOU cannot accommodate our mini-workshop for more than two days.

This means that our only brainstorming sessions will be held at the UPOU.

We then need to find appropriate organization in Manila which can
accommodate our tele-learning and tele-medicine demonstrations.

This is the job I want you and Ralph will work on.

(3) In order to get some feeling what those demonstrations will be,

(a) pls get together with Teresita, Art, Ralph, and view followings
with a 56 Kbps dial-up (or leased line) modem,

If you have a computer screen projector, it would be much
better to view in a large screen.

(b) tele-learning demonstration (to be performed in an afternoon):

1. Pls visit the International Workshop/Conference on Emerging
Global Electronic Distance Learning (EGEDL)," August 9th -
13th, 1999, University of Tampere, Finland at;

Pls click Roger Boston's web in its home page. Then, click
August 9 in the left column.

You may enjoy viewing other dates in the left column.

Download the template and try to use it. If you have
any questions on it, pls ask Roger Boston.

2. Pls visit "Exciting show on low-cost distance learning by
Roger Boston et al. - February 20, 2000" at

Then, visit <http://www.teched.org/starlink>.

Pls listen carefully what Colette said in this show.
Those technologies will be demonstrated which will be
very valuable not only for tele-learning, but also for
any other BUSINESSES.

When you view it with 56 Kbps modem, I am sure that
you will encounter with same trouble I described in my
previous listserve mentioned above. If the speed of
your Internet access is higher, you can view it more
smoothly. This is the one of major purposes of having
the demo during our mini-workshop, i.e., opening up
the eyes of your local decision-makers for the need of
broadband Internet.

(c) tele-medicine demonstration (to be performed in a morning):

1. Pls click Roger Boston's web in the home page of the above
web site. Then, click August 9 in the left column.

You can then click Telemedicine1 and Telemedicine2 at the
top of the right-hand side column to view video clipping of
our echocardiograph demonstration with Presbyterian Hospital
of Columbia University in New York with PictureTel via ISDN
at 384 Kbps.

In this home page, pls also click "FINAL REPORT OF THE
CONFERENCE." Then go to "IV. Compilation of comments:" in
PART I. Then click Shin Takuma on October 8th. You can
then find Dr. Takuma's (Presbyterian Hospital) report of
this demonstration.

We want to do better than that during our workshop in Manila
with the use of a software for 3D imaging -- see ATTACHMENT
II.

2. As you see in them, the equipment we need for this demo are;

a. HP-5500 echocardiograph machine,

Ralph may be able to locate this machine in Manila.
If not, you may ask Raj's help -- see ATTACHMENT II.

b. PictureTel (or VTEL, or Polycom) videoconferencing
unit,

c. ISDN line -- preferably at 384 Kbps (or 256 Kbps),

d. a large TV screen.

Dear Raj:
=========

We will have a mini-workshop (similar to the one in
Manaus/Amazona) in Manila -- though its dates are not
decided yet. Pls visit Draft of Travel Grant Application
to the National Science Foundation for the Manila Mini-Workshop -- 1 of 5: Travel Grant Application / 2 of 5:
Workshop Schedule / 3 of 5: Grant Nominees / 4 of 5:
Philippine Counterparts / 5 of 5: GUS in the Philippines
Pilot Project Proposal - February 16-17, 2000, at

I would greatly appreciate it if you can kindly help Victor
and Ralph.

(4) You may inquire following organizations if they may accommodate those
demonstrations:

(a) Ralph's previous school, i.e., St. Luke's College of Medicine,

(b) World Health Organization (WHO)/Manila,

You may inquire to Dr. Park and Dr. Ikeda -- I met them at
the WHO conference in Geneva last month.

(c) Asian Development Bank,

You may inquire to Motilal Sharma -- you met him with me
last year at his office.

Pls read his enthusiastic support msg Distance Education
(Regional cooperation)" on August 9, 1999 at

(5) Looking forward to receiving your response to the above,

Best, Tak

Dear Dr. Utsumi:

Thank you for your reply as you had said, If I attend the tampere event, etc.
I will understand more, but the problem up to this moment is I still cannot
put the whole into picture.

Regarding the Picture Tel and availability of ISDN, to what specific business
line I should be inquired of. I'm really sorry, I don't understand these things.

Pleased inform me to what kind of business I should be inquiring.

Dear Raj:
=========

(1) It has bee some time since our last correspondences in last summer.
Hope you are well.

(2) At that time, you kindly offered us the use of videoconferencing bridge
for our telemedicine demonstration during our Tampere event, in
condition that we use your HP5500 echocardiograph machine. We were
sorry we could not find it in Finland -- but, we could use a Japanese
made machine and the in-kind service of PictureTel/UK's bridge.

Pls visit the International Workshop/Conference on Emerging Global
Electronic Distance Learning (EGEDL)," August 9th - 13th, 1999,
University of Tampere, Finland at;

Pls click Roger Boston's web in its home page. Then, click August 9 in
the left column.

You can then click Telemedicine1 and Telemedicine2 at the top of the
right-hand side column to view video clipping of our echocardiograph
demonstration with Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia University in New

Then go to "IV. Compilation of comments:" in PART I. Then click Shin
Takuma on October 8th. You can then find Dr. Takuma's (Presbyterian
Hospital) report of this demonstration.

In PART II of this final report, you can also find drafts of pilot
project proposals by groups in Asia-Pacific, North America,
Central America, Amazonas, European and African regions.

(3) ATTACHMENT I below is the tentative schedule of our mini-workshop to be
held in Manaus/Amazona on May 31, June 1 and 2.

The telepresence demonstration with echocardiography will be performed
at the workshop by the Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia University in
New York. The echocardiograph signal of a patient on a tread mill in
Manaus will be sent to Presbyterian for diagnosis, as we did during our
Tampere event in Finland last August. However, this time, the 3D image
of his heart will also be constructed as an upgraded feature, which can
be cut into a half to examine its inside. The echocardiograph image
will be sent to the Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia University in New
York for diagnosis. The images will be disseminated to the participants
around the world via ISDN and Internet.

(4) ATTACHMENT II is a msg from Dr. Rivas which informed us the availability
of HP5500 echocardiograph machine in Manaus.

I would then greatly appreciate it if you can kindly provide us with
your in-kind" bridge service for this epoch-making telemedicine
demonstration from the middle of jungle in Amazon.

Therefore, total anticipated participants of this videoconferencing are
(though some are still tentative);

(a) University of Amazonas - Manaus, Brazil
(b) Universidad de Costa Rica - San Jose, Consta Rica
(c) Columbia University - New York, New York
(d) Yale University/Norwalk Hospital - Norwalk, CT
(e) University of Michigan - Ann Arbar, MI
(f) University of California - Los Angeles, CA

(5) As you see in ATTACHMENT I, there will be many important delegates in
healthcare and telemedicine areas (among others);

(a) Association of the Amazonian Universities (UNAMAZ) -- which is a
consortium of universities in 8 countries in Amazon area,
(b) World Health Organization (WHO),
(c) Pan American Health Organization (PAHO),
(d) PanAmerican Federation of Associations of Medical Schools -- which
is a consortium of all medical schools in Latin America

Therefor, I am sure that you can warrant your offer of the in-kind
service.

(6) FYI, we are now forging ahead to establish a Global University System
with global broadband Internet which are to be financed with Global
Service Trust Fund (GSTF). Pls visit following URLs for more
information;

Dear Dr. Utsumi:

Thank you very much for your note. I was very happy to watch through
the websites the successful GLOSAS program you had at Tempere in
August 99, and now you are off to another great event in Amazonas in
Brazil.

There have been several changes in my life. First of all, I am sure
you are aware of the strategic realignment announced by Hewlett
Packard in 1999, in which HP created a new company named Agilent
Technologies. The new company is made up of original HP's businesses
in Helathcare Solutions, Test and Measurement, Semiconductor Products,
and Analytical Devices. Under its original name, Hewlett Packard
retains the businesses in computers and printers.

Agilent Technologies offered an IPO in November under the symbol A,
and we have been extremely successful in the stock market. So now I
work for Agilent Technologies and also relocated to Hong Kong for a
two year assignment in marketing and sales. My new e-mail address is
raj_gururaja@agilent.com. However, I can still receive the messages
sent to my HP address.

Now coming to your telemedicine event in Manaus, Brazil, I am very
much interested in Agilent Technologies participate in it. So I have
sent messages to our management in the US and in Latin America. I
should here from them in the next couple of days and will get back to
you soon after I hear from them.

Thank you again for your note.

Sincerely yours,

Raj Gururaja
