Dear Jose:
==========

(1) Many thanks for your msg of 1/19th as asking me information about our various projects.

(2) Pls click on "Current Reference Websites" at the top of the home page of our web
site which is listed in my electronic signature below to find out about our
following projects;

(a) Global University System (GUS),
(b) Global Broadband Internet (GBI),
(c) Global Service Trust Fund (GSTF).

Tapio Varis is a right person to inquire about GUS, and you can ask more
about GSTF to Peter Knight and Joe Pelton.

(3) Pls also click "Correspondence: Early 2001 / Mid-2000 / Early 2000 / Late
1999" in the home page to retrieve our previous list distributions.

(4) For example, if you click "Mid 2000," you can find "Fund-raising trip to
European Commission in Luxembourg - December 13, 2000" which ATTACHMENT II
includes "Outline of GLOSAS Projects." This is the brief description of the
current status of our projects.

You can find a comprehensive write-up about our projects in my paper
presented at the annual conference of the Asia Association of Open
University (AAOU) in Manila last October in the above mentioned
"Current Reference Websites."

(5) You can also find in this ATTACHMENT some descriptions of our Amazon project
by Alex Rivas in Manaus, Amazon. This Amazon project is to conduct a
community development as connecting higher and secondary schools, libraries,
hospitals, local governmental agencies in Manaus with broadband Internet.

Just prior to my trip to Europe, I sent to Alex my second draft of his
grant application to the InfoDev of the World Bank. I am waiting to
receive from him a list of participating organizations and their
physical map so that we can design their connections with spread
spectrum wireless broadband Internet.

If you click "Dr. Takeshi Utsumi's Overall Activities" at the top of
the home page, you can then go to "Projects/Conferences," and then to
"2000/May." You may then find Alex's PowerPoint slides very
interesting, entitled "Technology and Distance Education for
Sustainable Development of the Amazonia."

Alex wants to make his community development in Manaus to be
replicated in the localities of the members of UNAMAZ, a consortium of
77 universities in 8 Amazonian countries, in the future.

(6) We are now proceeding with:

(a) Philippines project with possible funds from the US National Science
Foundation and Citicorp,

(b) Manaus project with possible funds from the InfoDev of the World Bank,

(c) European project (working with the U.K. Open University and the
University of Tampere, etc.) with possible funds from the European Commission,

(d) GSTF project with possible funds from the InfoDev, etc.

During my visit to the UNESCO in Paris on 1/12th, we initiated a procedure to
become a member of UNITWIN program of the UNESCO.

According to Joe Pelton, INTELSAT, WorldSpace, etc., have already pledged
their participation in our GSTF project.

(7) BTW, during our attendance to the Information Day Conference of European
Commission in Luxembourg from 1/8th to 1/10th, Tapio received an invitation
from the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington D.C. to give a talk at
an Information and Telecommunication Conference in Nicaragua in February.

Find out the details (date and place, etc.) of the conference from Tapio and
you may also attend it so that you can meet him again.

(8) Wishing you very good luck for your endeavor of establishing a Global
University System for the Central America and the Caribbean.

Keep in touch.

Best, Tak
