Dear Larry:
===========
(1) Many thanks for your msg (ATTACHMENT I).
(2) The following persons will be at your office at 1:30 pm of 10/19th:
(a) Kimberly K. Obbink,
(b) Myron Nordquist,
(c) David A. Johnson,
(d) Tak Utsumi
Dear Yolanda:
=============
If you cannot make our mtg at PAHO on 10/18th, pls
feel free to
join in our mtg at Larry's office.
(3) At our mtg;
(a) we would like to express our sincere thanks for your
financial
support to our highly successful Tampere event,
(b) we would like to report about the event,
(c) we would like to hear of your suggestions for our future
directions.
(4) BTW, ATTACHMENT II is the outline of our final report.
(a) Tapio is now working to produce a brief summary of
the event, and
I will assist him as soon as I receive its draft.
(b) The current status of the activities of each region
is as follows
-- see Proposed Global University System Structure at
<http://www.kagawa-jc.ac.jp/~steve_mc/asia-pacific/index.html>
for
the each region;
1. Global University System:
Tapio is now working to incorporate it in Finland.
We will discuss the future directions of our
projects
when he drops by NYC on 11/5th on his way to attend
a
conference in Montreal, Canada.
2. Asia Pacific Region:
a. During our mtg at PAHO on 10/18th, we will
discuss the
write-up of the draft of a pilot project proposal
with
Kim and Ben Haraguchi.
b. Kim is now starting to contemplate conducting
distance
learning for nurse training in cooperation
with other
colleagues at the University of Michigan.
This is to
reach the University of Philippines/Open University
in
Manila. This effort may also include the health
care
information system project of the University
of
Washington in Seattle.
c. Ben Haraguchi plans to have our follow-up
workshop in
Tokyo next spring to come up with a feasibility
study,
action and administrative plans, etc. He
plans to
bring Tak Utsumi and Norman Okamura of the
University
of Hawaii to Tokyo and Manila for preliminary
discussions.
3. North America Region:
a. Kim will produce a brief mission statement
on the
broadband Internet connection of Native Americans
in
Montana and possibly in Arizona, too. Kim
considers
that remote/rural areas of Montana is ideal
test-bed
for our proposed wireless broadband Internet.
Once
its technicality is successfully proven there,
it can
be exportable know-how to many developing
countries.
b. Tom Keil is initiating to construct web
site which
include 3D animation images of artifacts of
Heard
Museum of Native Americans in Phoenix, AZ.
His
project may also include similar ones of the
Native
Americans in Montana.
c. Fund inquiries for this project has been commenced.
4. Central America Region:
a. Jose Brenes produced his draft of the pilot
project
proposal for the establishment of the Global
University in Central America, which will
be included
in PART II of our final report.
b. His next step is to hold a follow-up workshop
with his
colleagues in Central America -- similar to
Ben's
Tokyo workshop.
5. South America Region:
a. During his recent trip to Brazil, Marco
Antonio met
key officials of the Association of Amazonian
Universities (UNAMAZ) covering Bolivia, Peru,
Ecuador,
Amazonia, Venezuela, Colombia, Suriname, Guyana,
Brazil, and received their very favorable
response to
our project.
b. Marco will come up with his write-up on
our project which
will be incorporated into the draft of the
pilot
project proposal by Alex Rivas in the coming
few weeks.
6. Africa Region:
a. John Afele is now coming up with the draft
of his
pilot project proposal.
b. His university may act as the administrative
center of
our African Region operation.
7. European Region:
a. Ihor produced his draft of the pilot project
proposal
and Paul at the Open University is now refining
its
English expressions.
b. Ihor plans to submit a grant application
to IREX to
have a follow-up workshop at the Open University.
c. He also plans to submit a grant application
to the
USIA's Distance Learning in the Field of
Business
Management for Ukraine" program to kick-off
the
distance learning project of our Global University
System.
Looking forward to meeting with you soon,
Best, Tak
