Dr. Hans d'Orville kindly indicated me his willingness to request
UNDP's Internet Initiative for Africa in Gahna sending appropriate
persons from 7 to 10 African countries to Tampere event.

Atsuko-san (your former student in Helsinki) is now contacting the
Iniditative in Gahna on behalf of Hans, and also indicated me of
her desire to attend the event.

BTW, Hans also told me that he would solicit the interest
and cooperation of Europeans for our project during the mtgs
of European Union to which he would attend this week.

(b) On 7/7th, I visited following person;

Mr. Lane Smith
Coordinator of the Leland Initiative

Ken is the predecessor to Lane for the Leland Initiative before
his recent retirement, which extends narrow band Internet via
INTELSAT at 128 Kbps to about 25 African countries.

Dear Ken:
Many thanks for your attendance. Looking forward to
receiving your next msg.

Lane indicated his great interest in the US/Japan cooperative
approach to establish our global broadband (45 Mbps) Internet, and
will attend our Tampere event to describe the current status of
the Leland program. He would like to start dialogue on the
cooperative approach at the Tampere event, for the 6
representative African countries of the Leland program, so that he
can make more firm presentation during the Tokyo conference next
April (tentative) which is now being organized by the Foundation
for the Support of the United Nations (FSUN) in Tokyo -- probably
with funds from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
and others.

Ken will also attend the Tampere event and kindly agreed to be the
coordinator on infrastructure during our Tampere event with his
hard track records and expertise with the Leland program.

(2) Dear Timo and Tina:

I would then suggest that you may include the following two as the
supporters of our Tampere event;

(a) United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) <http://www.undp.org>,

(b) U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)
<http://www.info.usaid.gov>.

(3) Dear Timo and Tina:

Pls include the following three web sites in the AFRICA section in the
BACKGROUD DOCUMENTS of the handout binder -- before Afele's article;

(a) http://www.info.usaid.gov/regions/afr/leland/

(b) http://www.info.usaid.gov/regions/afr/leland/project.htm

(c) http://www.info.usaid.gov/regions/afr/leland/techdsgn.htm

Timo:
Pls download them and print.

Tina:
Pls just indicate the above URLs in our temporary web site for the
handout.

Thanks in advance.

Best, Tak
