SUBJECT: New publication from CSTB

Enclosed is a copy of the report, Networking Health: Prescriptions for the
Internet, which was recently released by the Computer Science and
Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council. This report is the
product of a multidisciplinary committee of health professionals and
information technologists who were charged to examine ways of enhancing the
Internet to better support a range of health applications. The committee was
chaired by Professor Edward (Ted) Shortliffe, now at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

Networking Health outlines ways of using the Internet to support clinical
care, consumer health, public health, health care finance and administration,
professional education, and biomedical research. Drawing on a series of site
visits, the report identifies the technical capabilities that the Internet
must provide in order to support a broad range of health-related activities
and proposes steps that are needed to ensure that these capabilities are
implemented in future generations of the Internet. The report also examines
the organizational and policy issues that impede broader use of the Internet
in the health community and recommends steps for overcoming these obstacles.

I hope you will find the report of interest and would appreciate your
assistance in disseminating it within the health and information technology
communities. Additional copies of the report are available from the National
Academy Press (http://www.nap.edu), and additional information on the project
(including links to the online version of the report) is available at
www.cstb.org. Please feel free to contact me directly at 202-334-2605 or
jsheehan@nas.edu if you have any questions about the report or the project or
if you have suggestions of other people or organizations to whom copies should
be sent. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
